Tip – Long Distance Relationship – Are They Less Successful than Other Relationships?

Tip Long Distance Relationship: Can Your Relationship Go the Distance?

A couple who is thinking about getting into a long distance relationship (or LDR for short) often wonder if it is worth the risk. As optimistic as you might be about making your love work, this may be sabotaged unwittingly by your own fears and the concerns of your friends, family members and colleague who have your best interests at heart.

Tip: long distance relationship DO work. You just need to learn how to go the distance and help your partner to do the same.

Tip: Long Distance Relationship – The Statistics Show They Work

When asked, most couples whose LDR had resulted in moving in with each other or marriage said that the most important factor in their relationship was compatibility.  Sharing similar beliefs about life, family, money, work and love is extremely important, as well as the ability to keep their partner interested and committed. Like any relationship, an LDR needs time and attention if you want it to flourish into a lifetime love.

But what is the likelihood of this? And how do the success rates of long distance relationships compare with traditional proximal relationships?

The Centre for the Study of Long Distance Relationships found that couples in long distance relationships were no more likely to break up with each other during the first year than couples in traditional relationships. Did I just hear you breathe a big sigh of relief? Yes, that’s right, so this is what you can tell your well-meaning parents, siblings, friends and colleagues when they try to discourage you from going the distance.

Tip Long Distance Relationship – During the first year, people in proximal relationships (PR for short) are much more likely to break up.

In fact during the first year, people in proximal relationships are actually more likely to break up with each other than those in distance relationships. While this may be due to the fact that people who are physically closer have more time to interact and thus, more time for conflict, it may also be due to the fact that couples in LDRs put a bigger focus on making the relationship work.

Or maybe it’s because people in LDR’s have broken free of the mold that their parents made and allow each other to explore the world of opportunities available to us in this modern age, while still coming together to love, care for and support each other. After all, maybe the traditional model is not that effective. Think about the people who stay married for life even though they despise each other or the couples who jokingly (but truthfully) refer to each other as the ball-and-chain.

What is a relationship worth anyway if it’s more about finding ways to get away from your partner, rather than celebrating each moment you have together?

Tip: Long Distance Relationship: When a couple looks forward to and celebrates each moment together, the relationship is more ultimately fulfilling. Perhaps this is why there are many successful LDRs and even happy long distance marriages.
