The recent interest in long distance relationships statistics alone is evidence that this type of relationship is on the rise. Now, more than at any other time in history, the use of technology and the ease of travel have made it possible to have a satisfying relationship despite the distance.

According their stats, 1 in 10 marriages started as distance relationships with the initial dating period lasting about three years. Back in 2005, the Center estimated that there were over 3 million people in the United States in long distance marriages. While it’s easy to count the number of marriage, keeping track of people in long distance dating relationships is trickier, but the Center estimates that about four and one-half million couples are in relationships of this type.

Of course these long distance relationships statistics only cover the United States and do not take into account that couples who are having LDRs often live in different countries, not just different states. Again, this is due to factors like technology, fast, fairly inexpensive air travel and a global economy. Although no one tracks the numbers outside the United States, it is generally agreed that there has been in rise in this type of relationship and that people are staying together while living apart because they’re going to college in different parts of the world, have job commitments or are serving  in the military.
