Long Distance Relationship Poem – How to Write A Romantic Love Poem
Looking for a romantic long distance poem to give your partner? When searching for some great poetry for this page, all the poems I could find were primarily about the death of a lover, rather than the joys and challenges of being in an LDR. Since being in a distance relationship is about life and love and living fully, I decided to teach you how to write your own romantic poetry instead.
So instead of posting a page of long distance relationship poems that won’t speak to the heart of what you’re going through, you’ll learn how to write a romantic poem for your partner. Imagine how thrilled he or she will be! (Of course, I am also hoping that you will post your romantic poetry on this page and share it with the world.)
As an author who has written and published a number of poems and books, here is the process. Of course your long distance relationship poem does not need to be published, it just needs to be shared with the person who inspired it.
How to Write a Long Distance Relationship Poem
- Take a pad of paper and a pencil and go to a place that inspires you with its natural beauty. This could be a park, a river, a garden, the mountains, your own backyard or someplace that you and your love hang out when he or she is in town.
- Let in the beautiful of the natural surroundings. Take in the sights, sounds, smells, and the feel of the environment. Let yourself relax and open up your heart and mind. Feel the energy coursing through your body. Now sense your connection to your loved one.
- Picture your sweetheart and write down the descriptive words or phrases that come to you. Write down the pet names that you call each other.
- What do you love about your partner? What endears you? Jot it down.
- Describe what it feels like to be with your partner, fully present and enjoying each others’ company. What does it feel like to be apart? Record your thoughts.
- Take a moment and close your eyes. Let these feelings, words and perceptions wash over you. Listen inside yourself for the words that will start your poem. Write what comes to you without judgment or editing. Just let it flow.
- When you are done writing your long distance poem, sit for a moment in gratitude at what you just received. Wait for a moment to see if any more words, thoughts, feelings or images come to you. If so, repeat the process.
- When you are ready to go, take your poem with you and put it on your bedside table with a pencil. If you have any thoughts or feelings to add to it, jot them down. Right before you go to sleep, read your poem. Set an intention to write a romantic long distance relationship poem that express what is in your heart. Words or phrases may come to you especially as you fall to sleep or as you wake up in the morning. If so, write them down.
- Now that you have “slept on your poem,” the next day, you can begin to work with it, edit, refine and polish. Use resources to do so, such as a book of favorite romantic poems, the dictionary and thesaurus. If you want the poem to rhyme, you can also get a rhyming dictionary.
- Once you are pleased with your long distance relationship poem, read it out loud. Ask yourself: does it express your feelings, do your words paint pictures in your mind (if not, try using more specific, descriptive words), does the poem have a sense of rhythm and resonance? Do the words flow off the tongue? When you can answer “yes” to these questions, your poem is done.

Presenting Long Distance Relationship Poems to Your Partner:
In the culinary arts, they say that presentation is everything. This is also true when it comes to romance and poetry. You’ve worked hard on your long distance relationship poem, so don’t just send it in an email or text message.
Instead, choose a romantic font on your computer (or you can even hire a calligrapher) and buy beautiful paper for your poem. There are some beautiful sheer papers that I love simply because they seem to be as light as the feelings that pass through us every day. You might even think about framing your poem with a favorite photo of you and your loved one.
Make sure the ink is dry (especially if using sheer paper) and then spray lightly with cologne or perfume. Send your long distance relationship poem to your partner along with a rose preserved in silver or gold or a specialty box of chocolates. The preserved rose represents the permanence of your love and the chocolate represents the sweet sensuality of your times together.
Make sure to post your long distance relationship poem to this page, so you can inspire others and we can build a collection of long distance relationship poems that are about the living, instead of the death of a lover.
